Jack McGarry is The Dead Rabbit Grocery and Grog’s co-founder and operating partner, who also created its extensive historically-based drinks program. In July 2013, he was honored with the prestigious Tales of the Cocktail International Bartender of the Year award. He is its youngest ever recipient, and only the second in America (after the legendary Audrey Saunders).
To realize the Dead Rabbit project, McGarry tested thousands of recipes from scores of cocktail books from the mid-nineteenth century from the likes of Jerry Thomas and others. Each recipe was adjusted to account for the contemporary palate, which sometimes involved making 50 to 70 versions of a single drink before one was deemed the best. The result is a voluminous cocktail menu with 72 libations, bottled and communal punches, beer “pop-inns,” and the largest selection of Irish whiskey in New York.
Immediately prior to joining The Dead Rabbit, McGarry tended bar at Milk & Honey London, one of the world’s most highly-awarded bar operations.
Prior to Milk & Honey London, McGarry realized his bartending ambition of working with Dead Rabbit founder Sean Muldoon at The Merchant Hotel, which was declared “World’s Best Cocktail Bar” in 2010 at Tales of the Cocktail.
